LED Back-Lighting – The Next Generation TV

Modern TVs are unrecognisable when compared to their first ancestors. You used to have to sit a meter away if you wanted to see anything at all and you only got black and white with the first models. We have come a long way since then and new generations have brought with them such things as wide screen, flat screen and surround sound.

The newest television innovation to make its way into the market is LED-lighting. LEDs are cropping up all over the place recently, in everything from car headlights to light-up crystal vases. They are popular because they are very reliable, create very true light and use a great deal less energy than other forms of lighting. The old florescent lights have been the standard for a good while and have been able to supply TVs with light through many developments and generations, but the time has come for something better.

An increase in demand for faster, slicker and more defined pictures, coupled with a desire for everything to be super slim, goes some way to explain why LED lighting found its way into TVs. People want their phones, stereos and even vases slim line these days, and TVs are no different. Unlike traditional lighting, LEDs only need to be situated on the edges of the screen as a diffusion panel is used to spread the light over the whole screen evenly. This means that many models are only around an inch thick. They also provide greater dynamic contrast and offer a wider colour gamut.

Another benefit of the LED technology is that it is a lot more environmentally friendly. The LED lights consume only around a 4th of the electricity that the standard fluorescent lights do. When the TVs are finally disposed of as well, their pollution levels are much lower than fluorescent TVs. Additionally, the LED TVs are a lot safer and have less change of exploding due to power surges or contact with liquid. That said, its not advised that you start resting your wine glasses on top of them, just in case.
