Getting the best out of your pet photos

Digital cameras have got better and better a lot over recent years and quite a few can be purchased at sensible prices. Nevertheless, if you enjoy taking pet portrait photos, which camera is the right choice?

First off, don’t be too concerned with the number of pixels, unless you want to output your images in poster form. They don’t actually give you better quality pictures, but allow you to make bigger prints. The lens makes the most difference when it comes to quality, having the most influence over the quality of a photograph. The other bits? They make life easier. The Nikon D90 is a good all-round package (June 2010), if you have around £ 700 to spend. With 12 megapixels and an ISO range of 100 – 3200, it can take shots in quite low light without a flash or the image going grainy. For the animal or pet photographer, the cameras ability to take 4.5 frames a second will enable you to capture those critical moments.
All the same, there are various techniques to help you get the best pet portraits Be patient. If there is somewhere were they prefer to play, leave the camera somewhere nearby, it can then be easily grabbed when the moment arises. Plus, be sure to have sufficient film or memory in the camera and that the batteries aren’t likely to fade as soon as you point the camera!
Composition. If your pet is black, avoid dark backgrounds, and similarly lighter coloured pets don’t show up well against light backgrounds and avoid messy or complicated backgrounds

Lighting. If you take the picture indoors, try to do it in bright natural light. Try to choose a time of day when the sun is low in the sky, morning or evening is preferable, also overcast days offer a soft complimentary light for your portrait.

Interesting angles. Try taking your photos at ‘pet level’ or from an unusual angle. A toy can be easily employed as a distraction, if they’re looking in the wrong direction.
