For many people, the topic of telecom billing solution can be confusing. There is a lot of information related to it which is not commonly known for most individuals. It can even seem somewhat intimidating for some people to understand. However, some of that information can be shortly summarized into the main points of the history associated with the technology. The following is an overview of some of the basics.
OSS is actually the abbreviation for operational support system. This system is only used by telecommunication providers and their businesses. The term is meant to refer to various network systems and inventory that is associated with it. You can also use it to refer to components of a network which needs to be configured or other provisioning services.
It should not, however, be confused with BSS. BSS stands for business support system. The term is fairly more recent and is somewhat new. It refers to businesses that deal with payments and taking orders. This would also deal with customer interaction and bill procession. There is a difference between BSS and OSS, but it should be noticed that both terms are used together most often. This is because they interlock in interactions.
Before 1970, almost all telecom billing system activities were being done by individuals. After the year passed, it was realized that a lot of these things could be done with technology instead of the use of human labor. So telecommunication companies decided to created computer systems that would be able to take care of many of these tasks.
Because of this decision, the Unix operating system and C programming were eventually designed. This was just the first of many other forms of technology that were designed and still affect the world on a daily basis. Despite this technology, the original computer systems that were used for OSS were not able to be networked together at the time. This would mean that tasks were completed on a separate system each time.
Because information was not available to be directly sent between systems, there had to be an individual that would pass the information instead. This involved someone that would transfer information via switches and plugs. This was the only option that could be used to pass information between the systems as a whole until networking was eventually discovered and perfected.
Although OSS has changed a vast amount since then, there are still some problems with the system. It is considered very expensive for upkeep and is thought to be too large. The telecom industry has a goal that eventually they will discover a way for OSS to become a smaller based system. This would be less expensive and would be more organized as a result. Because of this goal, there is constant research to change the production of OSS itself.
Of course, there is much more to know about telecom billing solution. This is the most simple overview of the main history and points of the system. This technology is always changing and expanding as time progresses. It is hoped that as years continue, there will be a greater change in the technology that is associated with OSS itself.
