What Web Design is All About

website design has a relatively brief past. In fact in the great scheme of things the internet has not been around that long and therefore neither has web design.

For an art so young web design has certainly had its fair share of modifications. The first procedure implemented to guide the art of web design was the clunky but still used today HTML code.

HTML made the web accessible and in turn created the field of web design. The biggest frustration with HTML was the fact that to change a certain colour or style all pages needed to be edited. But then came CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) with the ability to properly divide the style and structure of sites on the web.

Some top tips for designing your website:

  • Clear, concise navigation This is vital if you want your users to be able to easily use your website without getting frustrated. Ask yourself “where do I want me users to go?” and then make it obvious.
  • White space can be used as a visual aid to help users easily identify areas of the page that are of interest to them. Use white space wisely to guide a user down your pages and consume your carefully written content.
  • Don’t use tables for displaying your website as this is another layer of code that can be easily replicated by the correct use of a style sheet. Tables now have one use and one use only and not surprisingly that is to create tables of data that visitors to your site can easily read.
  • You need a fast webiste. The speed of your website is now used as a ranking factor in google’s algorithm. While not inhibiting your natural design flare it is important to make some compromises when it comes to the speed of your page.
  • Having your website support a number of different browsers is critical to ensuring a uniform site appearance across different mediums. Making sure your new website displays properly on all browser types is essential if you want to portray an image of quality. The most problematic browser when it comes to compatability is internet explorer from microsoft.
