One way to upload or download data to and from the internet is FTP (File Transfer Protocol. It is important for web hosting because this is a common way for websites to be uploaded to the web. Once a website has been created and is ready to be seen online, FTP can be used to get it on to the World Wide Web. And while not every website is uploaded to the internet using FTP, the vast majority of them are done with this protocol.
What is meant by File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?
FTP is a network protocol and allows communication between different client and server applications. The fact that FTP allows for data to be sent from one operating system to another is probably one of the best things about it. For instance you could send information from a Windows operating system to a Mac system. FTP was originally known as RFC114-FTP and has been on the scene since the early seventies.

When you create your web pages you will more than likely transfer it to the web host using FTP. It will then stay on the server until somebody wants to visit the site. And FTP will then be used to transfer it to the system of the visitor. There are quite a few different FTP programs that will allow you to upload your pages to your server, but they all do much the same thing. Developers were quick to deal with any security concerns which were raised over the last few years in relation to the FTP prototcol.
Although many of us will have heard of FTP on a regular basis, the majority of us are not really aware of what is involved with it. The main thing is that it works and allows us to make our web pages available to anyone who might be interested.
