Networking phrases unleashed

Here we are going to cover some of the most common networking terms you may come across.

ADSL – Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, this is the most common form of broadband in the UK where the upload speed is less than the download speed.

IPTransit – Internet transit hosted by an ISP.

Atom – similar to RSS, but a newer technology with more facilities. It is still being developed but is becoming more common place. The technology is based on RSS. RSS powers this technology. .

Bandwidth The total of information you can send through a connection. Measured in most cases in mbps or kbps.

Blog Is similar to an online journal diary where a person or company may publish its thoughts or opinions, but can also publish facts. Most bloggers update once a week, where blogs are chronologically arranged.

Co-Location Where a server belongs to one person or company but is hosted on the internet by another company or person.

DHCP – Dynamic Host Configuration – distributes IP addresses to clients on a network dynamically.

Domain Name A unique name that is used to identify an internet site. They have several parts to them, the first being the actual name like my site and then the second half being the top level domain like .com or . co.uk etc and their parts are always separated by dots.

Ethernet – a standard networking method via a LAN, with varying speeds. Ethernet – a common networking method on a LAN. Several speeds are available.

Firewall Can be either hardware or software based to prevent access to another network for security reasons.

FTP File transfer protocol a common method transferring files around the internet quickly and easily.

A host is a computer or client on a network that provides services to other computers or clients on the same network.

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol allows hypertext files to be transfered to and from and across the internet. HTTP is the most important protocol used in the World Wide Web (www)

IMAP is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by email clients in communicating with email servers. IMAP allows for email to be accessed and manipulated on a remote server. IMAP allows for greater control over email as they can be stored, emailed etc and shared between groups where POP email can’t.

IPv4 Internet Protocol version 4, this is the most widely used version of the internet protocol. IPv4 allows for a maximum of four billing ip addresses. Because of this it’s being replaced by IPv6. IPv6 is slowly replacing IPv4 as it allows for the use of more IP addresses.

IPv6 is slowly coming into play as the replacement for IPv4, allowing for a vast amount more IP addresses.

LAN – Local area network is a private network of computers.

Network When two or more computers are connected together to share resources.
